Has SEO Really Changed?
SEO (Search Engine Marketing) has been around since the first days of search engines, all the way back to 1995 and Altavista. This was before Google even existed! Back then, as now, people saw how powerful Search engine traffic was and wanted more of it. Common wisdom has it that the engines have undergone huge changes since that time, and in some ways this is true. Back then, if you put a keyword in your meta keywords tag you would probably be in the top 10 for a given search. Today, Google doesn't even look at that tag any more.
Most of the changes, however, have been to stop spammers. You still see these sites sometimes. They are the ones that have links to 100 different unsavory sites (poker, viagra, etc), each of which themselves have no useful content. You probably wouldn't, but don't do this! Google hates it. They struggle to return only high quality sites to users, and that is why you use them (70+% of web users now do).
The focus on high quality is the key to understanding time tested SEO fundamentals:
1. Do keyword research, so your content matches what users are actually searching for.
2. Build great content on your site, placing these keyword prominently
3. Attract and build links from other quality sites
Just like fruits and vegetables are always healthy, so are quality links and keyword researched content.
